Synopsis:
It is 1967. Physicist Robert Oppenheimer, the creator of the atomic bomb, is dying. Although many people are waiting for an apology for the atom bombs that hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 Oppenheimer has no regrets. He has based his ethical thinking on art, poetry, philosophy and several myths. They prove him right, he believes.
He tells his life’s story to a nurse, guiding her through his life and the myths that shaped him. As he leads her through his years the room surrounding them ceases to exist and we are transported elsewhere. From a German university to the Garden of Eden, and from ancient battlefields in India to Prometheus chained on the tops of the Caucasus mountains. "Am I the man who stole fire from the gods?" Oppenheimer wonders. "Or am I a man made of fire?”
Slowly, his convictions are starting to crack as the nurse questions his believes. Did he truly understand the lessons from the myths about Eve and the snake or prince Arjuna and the deity Vishnu? Or did he miss the point and has he become a hollow man? Will the creation of the nucleair weapon have a consequence for his soul?
